A home business plan like any, encompasses several aspects of the business from its establishment and its goals to the methods it uses to achieve them and the anticipated results. The business plan may vary from business to business but an outline might look something like the following.
First an introduction, setting out the aims of the business and what it does. This section would normally also talk about the ownership and structure of the business (whether a partnership or limited company etc).
We might then expand the plan to talk about the business environment, for instance what is the level of demand for your product or service? How heavy is the competition in the market and how will you overcome it? What is it that you will do better or differently? How will your business be marketed and advertised? How will your pricing be perceived?
The day to day management might be the next aspect to set out. For example who will be responsible for the various tasks? How will the product or service be delivered? Will there be other partners or staff involved? If so who will employ them? What other resources are required to perform the service, equipment? finance? insurance? a vehicle?
You might then turn to the financial aspects of the business such as how will the startup of the business be funded? What about the ongoing expenses? What is the anticipated cashflow for the first 12 months? Try to
anticipate the typical problems that can arise – an illness, a new competitor on the scene, a delay in getting established, these are all scenarios its best to put some thought into before you actually get started.
Establish some financial and other goals at anticipated times so that as you advance through the first year you can review your actual performance against the plan. For example when do you expect to see income and expenses breakeven? When might you expect to book the first big sale?
As you start to think about these factors you’ll find that other thoughts arise that start to customise the plan to your own particular business.
