Apologies for the lack of posts recently, I’ve been rather busy with some other websites I assist with and if truth be told I’ve also been taking a little time out to refresh the soul. A friend asked recently how I get the ideas for internet marketing from and I found myself talking about the various sources of inspiration which might be of interest to those who do IM.
The ideas for products to promote can come in many different ways but the most common ones are tv, magazines and chat with other webmasters and marketers. How many times have you seen products marketed in big budget advertising campaigns? Daily? If the big guys are spending up big on advertising a product, chances are there are opportunities for the little guys too!
Magazines are a great source of inspiration, all those ads you see month after month have somebody paying for them which indicates the niche is profitable. Now you need to find an affiliate program in that niche (or a related one) and you can plan your strategy.
Just talking with other marketers can give you a truckload of ideas. Someone mentions an idea, someone else comments on it and before you know it you’re thinking of sub-niches. A word of caution on IM forums though, there are those who will talk up certain affiliate programs who are not neccessarily genuine. I can however highly recommend the forum at The Wealthy Affiliate which continues to be a big source of ideas and inspiration for me.
I should mention that the marketing approach differs depending on the reward. Typically I only use Adwords on products with a commission payout of $30 or more, this applies whether its a one-off commission or an average expected payout in the case of recurring commissions which pay a lesser figure every month. In the case of smaller commissions like those from say Amazon it is often not economic to use Adwords but easy to do a little article marketing on.
