Well I seem to be on a roll here so might as well keep it going…
Lets suppose we decide to write an article to promote an ebook about making money from photography. Lets just say its the ebook “Starting a Photography Business” which we got our affiliate link for from Clickbank.
Now we could go and try to write an article entitled “Photography Business” but when I enter that phrase into Google with quote marks around it I get over 1.1million results – I’d say thats going to be hard to rank for , wouldn’t you?
Now if I enter “make money from photography” I get about 60,000 results and by entering “how to make money from photography” we get just 1,600 or so results. Those phrases are clearly going to be easier to get our articles listed for in the SE’s.
So how do we write an article ‘based around’ a keyword phrase? Well lets start with the title. In this case my article’s title is going to be “How to make money with photography” or “How to make money from photography” either one is fine as the SE’s will generally treat those minor words (with and from) as equals.
As of the time of writing the term “make money from photography” entered into Yahoo is pulling up a first page on which three different article sites appear with my articles on them! Ok so they’re at positions 5, 8 and 10 from where I’m looking right now but that is still three front page exposures for me.
Almost all of that listing juice has come from the title of the article. Seriously, if you simply write a decent article that is written for readers with a good title you are almost home! Try to weave the title into the body of your article two or three times (and particularly a ‘work-in’ in the very first paragraph) and you are at home, or at least in the driveway.
If you are placing your article on squidoo or hubpages try to name the page so that the web address looks ‘on title’ too (or as near as possible).
That is pretty much it for targeting a keyword phrase. Do a little research to see the level of competition then choose a phrase that may not be highly popular but which is less competitive.
Want a guideline? – I generally only target phrases where I see less than 10,000 or so competing optimized pages in google though this is not a hard and fast rule.
