How to Make Money from Websites

September 22, 2008

When we pose the question how to make money from websites, we tend to think of websites as a marketing channel where we market our wares, show off our successes, sell affiliate products or just write about our interests and monetize with ad placements.

We can certainly make money from websites in those ways but we keep forgetting there is another way! When we have learned how to establish websites and maybe even learned how to optimize them for some search engine traffic, we have learned a skill that is very much in demand by local business owners.

Thee must be millions of small businesses that would love to have a website showcasing their service and even more who want to be at the top of google results pages for the relevant keywords in their area. Why not sell your skills to them? Getting good search engine listings for local area searches is actually pretty easy. You could setup simple websites and get these businesses good local search results. How much do you think a business will pay for this?

A variation on this idea is to go ahead and build a website yourself focusing on a single industry in your area. Lets say you build a site which lists well for “indian restaurants suburb/city” or “suburb/city indian restaurants”. With that already in place you could then sell listings on it to the relevant restaurants!

So the point of this post is to draw attention to the fact there are several ways to make money from websites!

Direct Sales

Indirect Sales – getting visitors to call or visit

Affiliate Programs

Adsense or similar contextual advertising

Paid ad placements

Website building for others

Hi Rob, if advertising your website building service is a problem then why not make some websites for yourself. You would then have a portfolio to show potential customers and make some money from your own sites in the meantime!

Identify some hot markets, build websites based around the buyers keywords and sell affiliate products? If you are stuck for affiliate programs you can always host contextual ads like adsense type ads.

Remember when it comes to building websites for others, some advertising is free or low cost, notice boards and local business networking meetings for example. Maybe consider doing a freebie for a local charity or junior sports team too, you might be surprised at how word spreads around the community about your work when you do this sort of thing.

Hey , you have a very good blog, its excellent information in its field. You have done a great job, keep doing it for to help, people like Myself. I read many blogs earlier about this topic. But I never found complete information earlier, but your blog is giving real information. I also have several WordPress blogs. And in my experience social bookmarking, article submission and press release submission is way to quickly quickly get my blog posts spidered and am on page one of Google many times in a few hours
