Using Adsense on Blogs

January 31, 2011

adsense for blogsIf you are working from home blogging, Adsense is a great way to make money from most blogs. I say ‘most’ because there are rules against using Adsense on certain kinds of sites such as adult sites but for the majority of us thats not going to be an issue. If there are merchants and affiliates using AdWords to market products appropriate to your blog readers then you can pretty much bet there are suitable Adsense ads for you.

Adsense is simply the opposite end of the AdWords program or to be more precise the Display Network element of the program. Lots of merchants bid to place their ads on sites and blogs that host Adsense ads and you can host those ads simply by signing up for an Adsense account and inserting the code on your blog. Google will analyse the content of your site and automatically display ads appropriate to your topics. When your readers click those ads Google shares the revenue they get from the merchant with you the blog publisher. Most ads will generate a 68% share so if you are blogging on one of the more competitive topics you can make significant amounts from a relatively small number of ad clicks.

Of course there are some rules and obviously you cannot click on the ads you have placed on your site. Google is very good at detecting any kind of deception, it has to be to safeguard its advertisers and preserve the integrity of the program so if you have poor quality traffic on your site you can expect to see little return from your Adsense account.

On the other hand if you have a genuine blog with good unique content and interested visitors on your site you can monetise your blog very successfully. So how much can you make? Google does not allow anyone to give details of their income but there are many bloggers using Adsense as their main income source.

Some Tips for Using Adsense

Experiment with placement of ads on your site. Different audiences have different behaviours but ads appearing in the top left of a page tend to get the most clicks in my experience.

Experiment also with the shape of ad unit you use, while results may vary there are many bloggers who swear by the 300 x 250 and 336 x 280 sizes, I tend to favour the 160 x 600 (skyscaper) size.

I usually set up the colour preferences so that the ads blend into the site but you might find a contrasting style works best for you.

I do not advise using more than 2 ad units on a page, I think it makes a site look like kind of spammy but that’s a personal taste, I also never use the link units only ads.

Don’t go thinking you can write blog posts on a topic just because the AdWords costs look expensive (and therefore the Adsense payouts larger). Not only is it likely to be difficult to get traffic to your posts but the best paying ads are likely to shown only on the most authoritative sites.

Never try to entice or encourage clicks on the ads, whether by using adjacent images or otherwise, you will find yourself out of the program quicksmart.
