The globeandmail.com reports on Canadian entrepreneur Brian Alger who runs a soft drink business from his home apparently finishing his day by 1pm on most days. He has tapped into the nostalgia for a 70′s discount brand, Pop Shoppe, even re-registering the trademark and relaunching the brand with bottle custom designed to resemble those from the 70′s.

Last year the re-born Pop Shoppe sold over 6 million bottles making it Canada’s second largest selling premium soda. Remarkable enough though when you consider the man knew nothing about the soda business and actually has no empoyees you can’t help but admire him all the more. He runs the entire operation from home its all outsourced meaning his workload is really all about co-ordinating the efforts of the various partners involved.

Of course it was no easy ride to success, the article explains how Alger got started, the costs involved and the many failures and disappointments before the first glimpse of success. Now with sosme success under his belt Alger is looking to make a dent in the much larger US market!

This is a well written article by Joanna Pachner an inspiring story of how one entrepreneur’s journey had lows before the highs, check it out here.

Just saw this excellent and funny little video explaining the principles of social media marketing.

Its aimed at larger enterprises than most work at home businesses but the principles are the same no matter what your size. If you have a business in just about anything you can learn from this how to spread the word in a positive light.

I keep coming across some cool little businesses run right from home that almost anyone can do.

I recently came across a couple who have a nice little business dealing in sports related collectibles including football trading cards as well as little figurines and souvenir signed posters etc.

They do everything in their own time using a website to market their goods and getting traffic from links, adwords and some ebay marketing.

While its not their main income they do very nicely from it, its enough to pay for the treats and to set up their retirement fund, though I reckon they’ll be doing this stuff well past retirement from work.

Good luck to them, always nice to hear of folk setting themselves up with a little security doing something they love!

What if you could develop an idea to the point of success and then boil it down to a process that can be replicated endlessly? You could either repeat the process or you could package it and sell it to others. This is how some of the great affiliate marketers have made their biggest successes.

Being an affiliate marketer is a bit like that, you see once you learn how to market a product you can take what you have learned and repeat it with some other product. Most affiliates have several different campaigns in motion at once, particularly those who use ppc marketing.

Just being in that position means you learn things about various industries and markets as well as improving your affiliate marketing skills. So what if you were to take all that info, package it up and sell it? You could do this as an online service like an ebook or course or as a more personally delivered service to local businesses.

The ebook or online course could be sold by you (and your own affiliates if you wish) while your experience could be marketed to other businesses. There must be dozens of small businesses nearby that could use the knowledge you have gained in online marketing. From those who need a simple website to those who need a whole marketing campaign!

Mention multi level marketing and you’re likely to get a bunch of mixed responses. MLM has had its success stories and its failures and certainly has a mixed reputation as a genuine home business opportunity.

MLM (also known as network marketing) is essentially the process of marketing a product or service to others and getting those customers to become marketers themselves. There are several varieties but the common thread is the continuation of bringing customers into the system as marketers to form a downline from top to bottom. The person introducing the new folk into the system gets a commission on their sales and on the sales of anyone they also introduce into the system. Sometimes this can go on for several levels.

The difficulty comes when these systems go too close to the illegal pyramid schemes. A pyramid scheme is one which generates money on the recruiting of new marketers rather than from commissions on their sales. If you find yourself in a system where you are paid based on your recruitment figures or encouraged to buy more product than you are likely to sell you may well be in a pyramid scheme.

There are several genuine MLM programs you can work safely with, just do a little research on them before joining. Be careful of those programs that get you to attend motivational meetings, they can be intense brain washing type experiences not unlike those cult religions you hear about and designed of course to get you all revved up about the system.
