Extreme Work At Home Success – Canadian Style

The globeandmail.com reports on Canadian entrepreneur Brian Alger who runs a soft drink business from his home apparently finishing his day by 1pm on most days. He has tapped into the nostalgia for a 70′s discount brand, Pop Shoppe, even re-registering the trademark and relaunching the brand with bottle custom designed to resemble those from the 70′s.

Last year the re-born Pop Shoppe sold over 6 million bottles making it Canada’s second largest selling premium soda. Remarkable enough though when you consider the man knew nothing about the soda business and actually has no empoyees you can’t help but admire him all the more. He runs the entire operation from home its all outsourced meaning his workload is really all about co-ordinating the efforts of the various partners involved.

Of course it was no easy ride to success, the article explains how Alger got started, the costs involved and the many failures and disappointments before the first glimpse of success. Now with sosme success under his belt Alger is looking to make a dent in the much larger US market!

This is a well written article by Joanna Pachner an inspiring story of how one entrepreneur’s journey had lows before the highs, check it out here.

Another Work At Home Idea – Sports Souvenir Business

I keep coming across some cool little businesses run right from home that almost anyone can do.

I recently came across a couple who have a nice little business dealing in sports related collectibles including football trading cards as well as little figurines and souvenir signed posters etc.

They do everything in their own time using a website to market their goods and getting traffic from links, adwords and some ebay marketing.

While its not their main income they do very nicely from it, its enough to pay for the treats and to set up their retirement fund, though I reckon they’ll be doing this stuff well past retirement from work.

Good luck to them, always nice to hear of folk setting themselves up with a little security doing something they love!

Home Business Scams

Work at home scams have been around since long before the internet however the increasing reach of the net has given the scam artists a new method of getting their schemes out to more and more victims. We’ve all seen ads and emails promising us wonderful lifestyles and great home businesses for just a small investment of our money and time and many of us will have been duped in some way or other ourselves. There are also many real opportunities and genuine ways of working at home, the difficulty is in sorting through the scams to reach the gems.

Firstly, your gut instinct can be a pretty reliable indicator, you know that feeling you get “it sounds too good to be true”? – Well yes that instinct is usually correct! Classic home business scams also show signs such as:

Claims of Insider or ‘Secret’ Information

Promises of Huge Profit for Little Effort or Investment

Unrealistic Claims of Simplicity “so easy a child could do it”)

No Previous Experience or Knowledge Required

Testimonials from people you can’t possibly identify or contact (J.Smith, London)

They can only tell you more about the great opportunity after you sign up

A look at the small business magazines shows some real old chestnuts are still going strong. Some of these scams have been around since the printing press. Be especially wary of scams like these ones: Read More…
